Review: Etna :: Push Life

Etna want to aim high and therefore go wide. The Dresden duo has most recently worked with living tech-house meme Solomun, inlaw-friendly rapper Marteria and the NDR big band. That smells like creative decisions that accounting calculates with a calculator, but sounds varied enough on their second album PUSH LIFE.

And anyway: Demian Kappenstein and the unnamed singer Inéz know a lot about production and songwriting. While the Fever Ray nods (“Aye Aye”), auto-tune excesses (“Lonely”), and stadium aspirations (“Autobahn”) may seem overly ambitious, the two’s inventiveness always makes up for even harder moments: Sophisticated beats and a multi-layered sound design are intertwined thanks to the hyper-flexible use of vocals to create very unique kinetic structures that are constantly in motion. In theory, Etna’s open-ended po(m)p might be used here and there, but in practice it mostly sounds outrageous.
