Review: Emeka Ogboh :: 6°30’33.372″N 3°22’0.66″E

In early 2021, Emeka Ogboh caused a stir with BEYOND THE YELLOW HAZE. Ostgut Ton offshoot A-TON re-released the LP following a contribution by the Nigerian sound artist to the Berghain art exhibition. While the predecessor still focused on larger contexts in Lagos, Ogboh for 6°30’33.372″N 3°22’0.66″E took the events around the Ojuelegba as a hook.

The atmosphere of this album becomes an aura

It doesn’t sound particularly different, and that’s excellent news: Even the “sonic zoom”, as the press release describes it, in Nigeria’s metropolis is bursting with incredibly engagingly produced beats that overwhelm and hypnotize in the maximalist sense. Earthly components such as the babble of voices, the honking of passing vehicles and a continuously present, humming background noise make it indispensable to use the somewhat tasteless trend word of immersion. Whether it’s the constantly hacking “No Counterfeit” or the slowly swelling heart “Oju 2.0” – the atmosphere of this album becomes an aura.
