Ellie Goulding sounds best when the shoulder pads are nicely pointed. When the synthesizer is programmed for 80s disco, the mood is dry and foggy, the beat is as bitchy as in the Madonna memorial song “Temptation”. In moments like this on Goulding’s fifth album HIGHER THAN HEAVEN, she’s a star – and not just a very successful stadium singer with a folk past.

The British woman became known in the early 1900s with the fairytale story of being discovered in a pub. Goulding first became an indie hopeful, then a full-blown pop singer who can crowd-pleaser for the Great Hall (and the “Fifty Shades” soundtrack).

But you never really understood who this artist is and wants to be – which HIGHER THAN HEAVEN will change little about: A few high-speed, power-pop and seriously great retro numbers from the fridge prevent everything from unquestionably great produced electro-pop indifference rises. The gently psychedelic wobbling “How Long” shows just how great things could be when Goulding were paired with a savvy stylist like Mura Masa. The shoulder pads then slip very stylishly.
