Review: Ellen Arkbro & Johan Graden :: I Get Along Without You Very Well

For her last album, Ellen Arkbro had multiple organs blaring at each other, but now she picks up the mic and sings moody Torch songs with titles like “Love You, Bye.” No, the joint album by the composer with a penchant for drones and the jazz pianist or multi-instrumentalist was really not to be expected, but it turned out all the more beautiful.

The pieces are arranged in a minimalist manner, instrumented like chamber music and equipped with a jazzy touch, and are therefore sometimes reminiscent of Mark Hollis in their exhibited fragility and at other times of the spartan moments in Tortoise’s early work. And yet a lot happens in this music, imperceptibly, while Arkbro stages herself as a distant crooner in equal measure, as she repeatedly expresses much bittersweetness.

I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL went through the phases of mourning according to Kübler-Ross. And with it, Arkbro and Graden presented one of the most surprising, weirdest albums of the year.
