In “Enug” Eight buckets of chicken hearts break their own basic rule: A real electric guitar roars at the atonal end. It was the only rule the Berlin band had given themselves, on their third album with the beautiful, if aptly titled MUSIK, they now end up on the rubbish heap of punk history. And? Also no matter!
Because Apokalypse Vega, Mr. Bottrop and Bene Diktator, the artist who has been retrained as a songwriter/singer and the two Kreuzberg institutions, expand their extremely entertaining, but nevertheless unembarrassing Dada-Punk not only musically with trombone, cello, piano, glockenspiel and the actually forbidden E guitar, but also in terms of content with more and more seriousness.
The only conceivable punk band in 2022
It’s not that Ms. Vega hasn’t always hidden a holy seriousness and infinite sadness behind her grandiose absurdity, not that even the most difficult subject is broken with naive humor, but now she has written songs about the impossibility of a relationship with a bipolar man ( “Street of Violence”), about the meaninglessness of self-discovery (“Sartre”), and then with “Requiem” also a song about dying, which is very frustrating on the one hand, but above all comforting.
“When we die, everything just lies around / All reasons, every carbon atom,” sings Vega, but also: “And one day all dogs will be dead / No drama and every offer / And no melancholy, no more brief happiness threatens.” And then the trumpet starts, a tear creeps into the buttonhole and you think: Eight buckets of chicken hearts are just great. Not just the only conceivable punk band in 2022, but the band you absolutely need, even if you didn’t know it until you heard them,
