Review: Dungen :: En Ar För Mycket Och Tusen Aldrig Nog

The album title EN ÄR FÖR MYCKET OCH TUSEN ALDRIG NOG stands for the fact that one is too much, while a thousand are not enough – a stoner thought that band leader Gustav Ejstes can ponder for a long time, so long that the deadline for a new Dungen- album has expired. It took seven years this time, in between there was only the soundtrack to an old witch film, which contributed about as much to the relaxation as chiseling in the neighboring apartment.

In 2004, Dungen from Stockholm released TA DET LUGNT, a major psych rock work that brilliantly combined hippie rock, bully folk and indie pop. The records that followed weren’t all bad, but Ejstes and his guitarist Reine Fiske couldn’t manage this mixture of joy of playing and pop appeal anymore. Dungen recently had their best moments as the backing band for the French singer Melody Prochet for her project Melody’s Echo Chamber.

EN ÄR FÖR MYCKET OCH TUSEN ALDRIG NOG is a new start: Dungen still play psych rock, but they’ve aired out their soundscapes, banished the patchouli scent from the pillows. In “Var Har Du Varit?” the drummer imitates drum’n’bass, “Höstens Färger” breathes the spirit of the late Beatles, with the enchanted ballad “Om Natten” the album ends as it began: magical.
