Review: Downpilot :: The Forecast

The longer THE FORECAST runs, the more pressing the realization becomes: Downpilot are actually pretty great. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, drummer, producer and engineer Paul Hiraga has been running the Seattle-based band as a solo show for some time now.

But even on his own, he sounds like an indie encyclopedia on his seventh album. Sometimes he seems to be a not so boring alternative version of Death Cab For Cutie, sometimes not so self-pitying REM. Hiraga also likes to unpack country elements or he loses himself in the same blissful harmony as the Fleet Foxes. In short, if indie is still your cup of tea, then Hiraga infuses one of the best herbal blends.

Sure, every note is in exactly the right place, you heard every harmony progression yesterday and the day before and the day before, and the navel around which the lyrics revolve could also be your own. No, it’s not surprising, but it’s really likeable and pretty great within the defined framework.
