Review: Dehd :: Blue Skies

Opportunities are changing for Chicago-based Dehd with the success of their 2020 album FLOWER OF DEVOTION. Not only did they spend an extended amount of time in the studio, they also enlisted the help of Grammy winner Craig Silvery and mastering engineer Heba Kadry for the first time. The nice thing about their fourth album BLUE SKIES: you don’t really notice it. The essence of their music remains unchanged.

It’s more of a nuance that takes them a step further in their development. With an unbelievable freshness and their garage charm, Dehd combine elements of bands like Galaxie 500, Shopping or Jesus And The Mary Chain, even The Velvet Underground, without forgetting to find their own language in their simple song structures. Bassist Kempf explores the possibilities of the human voice: whispering, screaming, languishing, squeaking. As a calming antithesis, the guitarist is faced with Balla’s singing.

“Bad Love” starts as a mixture of “Just Like Honey” and “Be My Baby” and then turns into pure joie de vivre. If you don’t want to run outside and embrace the world as a pout, you must be too stupid to tie your shoes. With BLUE SKIES, Dehd manages to create one of those albums that you want to cuddle and keep to yourself, but still want to show the whole world.
