The Berlin trio plays intense chamber pop whose loose ends refer to larger periods of time.
What is music? The title of the Byte FM broadcast by esteemed colleague Klaus Walter can be used to precede a consideration of the second Toechter album. Or: Where does music begin, how far can it go when three musicians, Katrine Grarup Elbo, Lisa Marie Vogel and Marie-Claire Schlameus, combine their classical training with a passion for pop and beat tinkering – all using analog sound sources , highlighting violin, viola, cello and the human voice?
In the second piece, “Me She Said,” these voices produce more onomatopoeic sound pieces that sound like “bä” or “mä” until a harmonious song enters the chamber music space to later be measured in the echo. So it’s almost a drone pop piece that was then brought into electronic form. But this piece also chases mercilessly through history. With a question: Is this the update that young musicians are giving Kate Bush’s romantic retreat? In the title track “Epic Wonder”, breakbeats drive into the soundscapes made of strings. This is how music can go when it starts playing.
