Review: Chip Shop :: Apocalypse Wow

Anyone who paid attention in philosophy class may still remember dialectics. What old Hegel invented is now being rediscovered by Frittenbude as the basic principle of their new album APOKALYPSE WOW. It probably had to be like this since the Berlin Antifa favorites shrank to a duo when Martin Steer left.

Not only in the song “Marx & Biggie”, feat. Philo-pop star Comrade Karl and his biggest hit “Dialectical Materialism” are designed thesis and antithesis. From the song “Searching/Finding” to the hymn to the vodka “Stoli”, in which “solidarity and promiscuity” happily find each other, to “The Glass”, which is always “half full” or “half empty”.

human or pig?

In “New World” the old fundamental question arises: Man or pig? In general, because it’s a chip shop: revolt or just a riot? Or also: crystal, liquor or cigarettes? When in doubt: everything! Then the synthesis succeeds, in which Frittenbude have no great interest as long as the Boller sound doesn’t lose its power. And he rarely does that, even if not much remains of the rap and techno beginnings of the project and the rock guitars set the tone on APOKALYPSE WOW.

But the best moment comes when Johannes “Strizi” Rögner and Jakob Häglsperger slow down, set themselves up for “Vbei” in a cultivated mid-tempo and realize: “All the pain, all the shit, and everything we don’t understand, will pass – it will pass.” One can only hope.
