Review: Castrated Philosophers :: Years // 1981-2021 (+1)

In the 1980s, the band name haunted all student groups in which music was exchanged, primarily the Smiths and The Cure. About the castrated philosophers, people mostly only whispered that there was a brother of the sister’s girlfriend who owned their records , and when, after a long wait, a copy of a copy of the LP reached the group of students, the cassette rustled terribly and you could hear music that seemed infinitely close and infinitely far away, everything was very mysterious. And this project remains mysterious to this day.

Of course we know the names and the history today, we know about the work of Katrin Achinger and Matthias Arfmann, about their importance in the German music underground, about their progressive thinking, which threw any idea of genre ties overboard. However, the music of the castrated philosophers remained a secret because the old records could not be found on the digital services.

From today’s point of view, the LPs sound like what the Abi newspaper from back then looks like today

That’s changing now: Achinger and Arfmann have looked through the catalogue, remastered the music and are now beginning to make things available again. As an introduction, there is a classic best-of album with YEARS // 1981-2021 (+1), and there are even two new tracks, so the compilation begins with “Time”, a great indie soul pop song about mercilessly ticking clocks. Then follows the performance show of the past 40 years: the techno’n’dub’n’reggae avant-garde of the nineties, the underground noir of the eighties, when Achinger and Arfmann anticipated bands like Mazzy Star or The Kills without ever giving them an account place.

From today’s point of view, the LPs from that time sound like what the Abi newspaper from back then looks like today; Matthias Arfmann’s necessary sound restorations give gigantic songs like “Lady P.” or the gothic ballad “Love Factory” a new shine. And maybe, thanks to the campaign, Nick Cave will now realize that the castrated philosophers have recorded a song with “Toilet Queen” that he urgently needs to cover.
