Review: Brezel Göring :: Psychoanalysis (Volume 2)

Of course there is the moment when you ask yourself: Do I really have to be there now? Listen while someone dives into their deepest abysses? Sympathy when someone mourns the greatest imaginable loss? Luckily, Brezel Göring finds moments of astonishing nonchalance over and over again, despite all the sadness that inevitably permeates this first album after Françoise Cactus died of cancer and the end of the symbiotic love and creative relationship of the Stereo-Total dream couple.

It helps immensely that Göring has never taken himself too seriously as a musician, and doesn’t even venerate demonstrative dilettantism as sacred, so he can start right away with a song like “Défoncé”, a French pun between Dada and enlightenment, so more of a homage to cactus. He can follow up “Meine Medizin”, a more fragile “Waiting For My Man”, with a cover of the German version of the hippie musical “Hair”, and then “Am Ende” get completely naked.

The music slurps along as if it doesn’t want to be dragged into the abyss, rhyming is for bores and of course you can’t stop listening. “You look depressed, but you’re just crazy,” sings the voice of Françoise Cactus in “Psychoanalyse”, broken, tipping over, already weakened by the disease, a greeting from the realm of the dead to the last living.
