Review: Boygenius :: The Record

The supergroup principle is far too often better in theory than in practice. What can go wrong when your absolute favorite artists get together to be even better together than alone? Quite a lot – this is proven by grandiose grabs into the toilet like the Hollywood Vampires (with Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper), the cooperation between Lou Reed and Metallica, or the fortunately almost forgotten combo Superheavy, a musical accident by Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and fellow musicians who took a silly joke at a coked-up Grammy afterparty a little too seriously.

But there are also the laudable exceptions, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, for example. And of course: Boygenius. The trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus got together out of sheer fangirlism for each other. The joint EP in 2018 was followed by collaborations on their respective solo albums, releases for a good cause and now finally: the debut album.

His 12 songs meander between reduced singer/songwriter pieces like “Cool About It” and likeable, loud-mouthed quasi-rock anthems like “20$” or “Satanist”, in which the three voices of the three artists ebb up and down support each other and let their strengths – especially Phoebe Bridgers’ anger – flare up. For all their preoccupation with frustration and self-doubt in their lyrics, the deep friendship between Bridgers, Dacus and Baker fills the songs with a warmth that also embraces the entire audience. The supergroup is dead, long live the supergroup.
