Review: Black Belt Eagle Scout :: The Land, The Water, The Sky

In the music video for the first song from Katherine Paul aka Black Belt Eagle Scout’s new album, My Blood Runs Through This Land, the singer walks through the foggy, black-and-white landscape of the American Northwest. The eponymous blood keeps running out of her mouth, which illustrates the ambiguity of the song and her third album: On the one hand, the blood is a metaphor for the connection between her indigenous ancestors and this country. On the other hand, it is the blood that European settlers shed in the violent takeover of this country.

On THE LAND, THE WATER, THE SKY, Paul negotiates her connection to those three things and thus her indigenous heritage. The result is a moving piece of music in which the multi-instrumentalist symbolically reconquers this country – with such a soft and clear voice that it always seems a little like the band is playing in a different room.

Even faster, heavier songs like “Fancy Dance” have an idiosyncratic calm – despite the fuzz pedal being pushed down. But it’s always the calm before the storm – this isn’t a feel-good nature album. It’s more about self-empowerment, as also becomes clear in the finale of the album: “Don’t Give Up” is about exactly that – that Katherine Paul doesn’t give up anymore because she has finally found her peace: in land, water and sky.
