Review: Bill Wells & Maher Shalal Hash Baz :: Osaka Bridge

In 2006, the album OSAKA BRIDGE was pretty much alone in the wild, such small and fine brass and orchestral music was still waiting – despite all the enthusiasm on the part of the critics – to be discovered by a larger audience. Today these 15 tracks meet with increased interest in post-jazz-brass (see also: ALIEN PARADE JAPAN, MINNA MITERU I + II, Le Millipede and the Rumpel Recordings of the Acher’sche Wedding Chapel).

The songs that Bill Wells and Maher Shalal Hash Baz recorded together back then, if they were to be performed again, would now find a place in the program of the Munich Alien Disko Festival, which was set up for “extraordinary sounds”. The Scottish jazz pianist Wells, who at the time of OSAKA BRIDGE already had a large list of cross-border collaborations (Jad Fair, Isobel Campbell, Barbara Morgenstern, Stefan Schneider), submitted the majority of the compositions for this trip, which was dedicated to the search dedicated to the soul of melody and beauty in improvisation.

Recorded with the ensemble Maher Shalal Hash Baz, these songs take on a strange provisional quality; Trumpets, french horn, baritone horn and cornet seem to point the way to a kind of chamber music that plays around itself again and again and yet finds a quick end track after track. Folk and classical music fans are said to have had a pleasant banging on their ears. The Karaoke Kalk re-release (vinyl, digital) includes two previously unreleased tracks (digital) as a bonus.
