Charlotte Brandi: “To the Nightmare” – Free and furious (Review & Stream)

Where is the way? Where fear lurks. Charlotte Brandi unmasks, disempowers and defuses them – for herself, but also for everyone who is brave enough to follow. The fact that she never nagges, but sounds moving and soothing, that her strength lies in the clarity of the filigree, but also in the dignified presence and precision of her language “To the Nightmare” to a jewel. Disturbing and beguiling at the same time.

Disturbing and beguiling at the same time

At the end of 2020, the Berliner-by-choice, who had already distinguished herself with her indie-pop duo Me And My Drummer, released a similarly colored EP: “An das Angstland”. A year after their famous debut, “The Magicians”, this dance of songs from the kaleidoscope of the female was no less enchanting, including the duet “Wind” with Tocotronic singer Dirk von Lowtzow. In 2021 the multi-instrumentalist played on Danger Dans “It’s all covered by artistic freedom” Accordion.

Brandi’s second solo album begins without any instrumental accompaniment. In the sublime opening chorale “Der Ekel”, a blemish that the protagonist initially interpreted in self-doubt is finally revealed as a male weakness: “Your antipathy has amazed me for a long time / Now everything makes sense: you are simply afraid of women!” These eleven pieces are suitable as a healing exposure therapy, because they were created exclusively with the participation of women or people read by women, including guest singing by Stella Sommer (“Vom Losen”).

Sometimes delicate and fragile, sometimes powerful and vehement

Brandi finds the most idyllic melodies between courageous chanson and clever art pop. She sounds sometimes delicate and fragile, sometimes powerfully vehement, always with a furious multifacetedness and in the outstanding “Vienna” also with self-ironic, boyish joke (“You’re so insecure / like all the other Germans too”). One of the songs is called “Frau” and is an escapist manifesto that calls for liberation from old role models. When we get records like this, it’s exceptionally fortunate that such themes are still necessary.
