Review: Beach Bunny :: Emotional Creature

The lyrics are often in complete contrast to the music: “Oxygen” is about the literal air to breathe and (survival) vital friendships, the music is so euphoric that you want to beam yourself to the next festival to get away from it all crashing into the crowd at the Alternative Stage. “Deadweight”, which dances on funky post-punk rhythms, and the college rock hit “Eventually” also bear witness to the emotional ups and downs that Lili Trifilio and her bandmates Jon Alvarado, Matt Henkels and Anthony Vaccaro have faced over the past two and a half years saw exposed.

After a few EPs and debut album HONEYMOON, Beach Bunny were on the road to success until Covid-19 set the band back on track. Singer and guitarist Trifilio even found herself in her childhood home in Chicago, where she managed to transform fear and despair into rousing power indie pop. Or in reflected-melancholic ballads like “Weeds” and “Infinity Room”, which tenderly absorb the exuberant energy of the other songs on EMOTIONAL CREATURE. Looks like Beach Bunny will effortlessly build on their pre-corona high.
