Review: Bart Davenport :: Episodes

Bart Davenport is one of those guys who’s always there, but it’s easy to lose focus because they weren’t or ever will be the big thing. When they release a new album, you’re as happy as if you got mail from an old friend – and you think: Why don’t I put on a Davenport record more often? This is also the case with EPISODES, the Californian’s eighth album since his debut in 2002.

In purely formal terms, the twelve tracks can be located in the singer/songwriter sector, but each one is a small world of its own. Davenport lovingly clothes his funny, always melancholic stories in nostalgic arrangements: In the story about the enigmatic “Naked Man”, the swinging London atmosphere is combined with the melancholy of a French chanson, while Davenport represents the “Billionaires” dancing carefree on their yachts. chooses a slowed down waltz beat.

Gentle bossa vibes bring “Easy Listeners” close to the style council, the lo-fi beat of “It’s You” thinks along with kinks and small faces. Davenport likes to try things out without overloading the songs, lets a western guitar waft through here, inserts a few psychedelic organ loops there, or, as in “All Dressed In Rain”, plays the eighties indie Schrammelbarden. EPISODES seems as timeless as if it has fallen out of time – and yes, you should really listen to Bart Davenport a lot more often.
