Review: Anna Erhard :: Campsite

Apparently, Anna Erhard already had a penchant for the simple life when she was making street music in Switzerland with her band Serafyn. Erhard’s second solo album after moving from Basel to Berlin is not only called CAMPSITE, it is also dedicated to the joys and sorrows of being outside in several songs. “I used to have a good time at the campsite / I was the leader ’cause I had the most mosquito bites,” sings Erhard in the title track, while the synth bleeps and bleeps most gloriously.

Because you shouldn’t imagine Erhard’s outdoor trip as hand-knitted and folky, but as varied as a hike through mountains and valleys: With her proven producer Pola Roy, Erhard casually puts together sneaky hits like “Horoscope” or “90°”, but these spread more urban style than campfire romance.

This is more likely to happen with guitar-heavy songs like “Family Time” or “Three Tons Of Steel”, while “I Wish” sounds as laid-back and chilled as a Jack Johnson surf song. There are little moments of surprise in every track, spooky voices that seem to come from everywhere like mosquitoes, or the Dinosaur Jr. commemorative guitar in “Idiots”. Great record, not just for the summer holidays.
