Review: Anaïs Mitchell :: Anaïs Mitchell

At least since her masterful reinterpretation of Orpheus HADESTOWN (2010), Anaïs Mitchell has been one of America’s great songwriters. The album has since become a successful musical, earning her eight Tony Awards. As a songwriter, Mitchell seeks divine moments in the most mundane of things. Because it takes time to find her, her solo albums appear quite seldom, especially since she also fulfills group commitments as a singer for the projects Bonny Light Horseman and Big Red Machine.

Giving her own name to her first record after an eight-year break is a logical decision: Mitchell wrote many of the songs during her pregnancy, during which time she moved back to her old home in Vermont. The song “Brooklyn Bridge” tells of this departure back into the past, “Bright Star” of the “wine of ages”, which does not give wisdom to a person, but at least an idea of who one is. Mitchell’s musicians (including Aaron Dessner) know what they have to do: dab and pluck instead of strumming and making noise.
