On her debut, the Baden-Württemberg singer Franziska Ameli Schuster stages an exciting mix of jazz, funk and a sensitivity to the sound of the 70s. In any case, you can feel an analogous warmth in these songs, which are simultaneously floating and firmly grounded. For example, “Suitcase,” which begins as a sultry hip-hop track and ends in an evocative ambient jazz séance. Schuster sings with a dark timbre and introspective attitude; there is an unusual silence in this music. Nice to hear, for example, in “Melancholia” and “Where Do We Go”.
Intuition, alertness for tension and relaxation as a dynamic pendulum
“Marion” alternates between breakbeat and hypnotic space, while “Lonely House,” which almost comes to a standstill, is reminiscent of The Weather Station. “Moon” is as evocative as Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song.” There’s plenty of space for free play here – Schuster and her great band walk through the doors when they open. The intuition, the alertness for tension and relaxation as a dynamic pendulum as well as a sensitive interaction are the assets of this amazing album.
