Review: Alison Goldfrapp :: THE LOVE INVENTION

As a soloist, Alison Goldfrapp finds the ease in the disco beat.

The message may have been irritating: Alison Goldfrapp releases her debut. How? The artist who has been the number 1 connoisseur favorite for almost a quarter of a century? Yes: because even if her project Goldfrapp bore her name, it was always created as a duo together with producer Will Gregory. Six years after the last Goldfrapp album, the front woman is now going her own way. And it sounds a lot more pop than the theatrical sound worlds of Goldfrapp.

THE LOVE INVENTION is an album for the dance floor and captures all emotions from euphoric peak time (“Love Invention”, “Fever”) to the ethereal after-hours (“Subterfuge”) with contemporary house beats, rich soundscapes and golf raps with an ethereal voice. She’s not alone with that these days: Beyoncé stormed the disco floor last year together with house icons like Honey Dijon, Drake also blurred the boundaries between hip-hop and house – rave culture is pushing into the mainstream.

After the pandemic, the desire for excess, hedonism and fun is particularly great. Alison Goldfrapp’s solo debut would have seen a little more excitement though. Instead, lightness reigns supreme on THE LOVE INVENTION. You’re welcome
