Review: Alex G :: God Save The Animals

So Soul Asylum. A band that many fans of Alex Giannascoli’s lo-fi bedroom pop might only know from car rides with their parents, best known to the world for their 1993 hit “Runaway Train.” has now bid farewell to his earlier suffix “Sandy”, seriously on his new album GOD SAVE THE ANIMALS.

At least a little bit: His “Runner” jumps on the “Runaway Train”, but derives it – with new text and a new courage to be remote – from the straightforward radio course. Sounds dangerous, but works surprisingly well. Just like a lot of things on the already ninth (!) album of the still only 29-year-old indefatigable: spooky nineties pop meets shattered electronic, psychedelic flow and classic indie craftsmanship with weird twists.

In recent years, one has certainly had enough of the echoed voice make-up gimmicks with auto-tune and other little helpers, but Giannascoli even wins over those unsettling and at the same time hypnotic quality in his songs, which used to make the whole thing interesting. Sure thing: This guy would even cover Bon Jovi in an interesting way.
