Only three players ahead of the Portuguese
The district derby between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 on Saturday evening was a special game for Raphaël Guerreiro. The 29-year-old was ordered by coach Edin Terzic to the unusual position in central midfield – a role that the Portuguese has played for the 30th time in his career, but not for the full 90 minutes for almost two years. The plan of the successful Dortmund coach worked, at least on the offensive.
In the 38th minute Guerreiro set up Nico Schlotterbeck’s opening goal, and in the 60th minute the left foot put BVB back in front with his second goal of the season. The fact that in the end it was only enough for a 2-2 draw and thus for the first time in the 2023 calendar year not three points for black and yellow clouded the successful evening of the regular left-back. Nevertheless, he wrote a chapter in the history books of the Revierderby that should not be despised.
In his tenth appearance against Schalke 04, Guerreiro was directly involved in goals eight and nine. In the 140-game history of the duel, only three players had a better result. Lothar Emmerich is the undisputed leader with 13 goals in 13 appearances, followed by two more ex-Dortmunders, Alfred Kelbassa and Reinhold Wosab (10 scorers each). Guerreiro is level with former sporting director Michael Zorc behind but needed fewer games to complete his tally. It is currently questionable whether the Portuguese will experience more derbies as a player. The contract with BVB ends in the summer, an extension is currently not in sight.
