Reuters: Biden to ask Congress for more than $770 billion in defense budget in 2023
The budget will include spending on the modernization of weapons, military equipment and space forces. The specified amount is preliminary, and the final size of the budget may be even larger than requested by the president, agency sources say.
US President Joe Biden will ask Congress for a defense budget of more than $770 billion for fiscal year 2023 (begins October 1), writes Reuters with reference to sources.
According to them, the final amount may change, and officially the head of state will submit his request in the coming months. About $773 billion will be allocated to the Ministry of Defense, and taking into account spending on other needs, the budget could exceed $800 billion. One of the interlocutors Reuters reported that Congress could advocate for an increase in the amount proposed by the President.
Among the priority areas of spending within the framework of the new defense budget, one of the agency’s sources called the construction of ships, the development of space forces, and the modernization of the “nuclear triad”. Another interlocutor Reuters noted that the Pentagon will continue to invest in the development of weapons in case of potential conflicts with Russia and China.
The draft US military budget did not include sanctions against Russia
The Pentagon also plans to decommission some of the obsolete and expensive weapons to use, such as littoral warships and A-10 attack aircraft. As the agency notes, the need to use the latter disappeared after the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, because this technique is inferior to the weapons of other possible adversaries with modern weapons.
