Return to school, with the emotionality that this implies

As a society we are going through a time of raw emotions. In the school environment, the aspirations and hopes of parents, the hopes of students and the expectations of teachers are intertwined in a clearly emotional context according to the interests of each of the actors.

Facing a new school year is always something hopeful where parents, teachers and students are all excited to be able to achieve different objectives for which different strategies must be established that are deeply conditioned by the consequences left by the pandemic that are still reflected in the school, added to the deep economic crisis that our country is experiencing, problems not unrelated to school life that influence the emotionality of children

The school is the sounding board of society; For example, violence is not school violence, it is social, in classrooms and playgrounds what happens in the family, clubs, streets, etc. is clearly reflected.

We can list some of the problems that we must address and establish prevention strategies: bullying, addictions (screens, narcotics, gambling), grooming, sexting, child sexual violence, suicides.

Given this panorama we can say that the contexts from which our students come condition them, they condition them but they are not determining, they are not determining because the school exists, the school as a transformer of realities and inspiration of auspicious life projects is a vital task.

When we are asked if education is important, no one would dare to say no, so each citizen must help from their role, the political leadership guarantees all the necessary means (economic, training, infrastructure, canteens, technical equipment) to be able to provide a quality education, parents accompanying from the responsibility of the importance of fulfilling education, teachers from the vocation of generating the pleasure of going to school and learning. I raise the issue of vocation because I believe that beyond the inconveniences that one goes through as a professional when children enter the classrooms, the vocation to teach must be born.

Socially, it is necessary to know what is happening to us emotionally, the uncertainty, nothing more annoying for the brain than not having control, which leads to irritability and terrifying (taking everything that happens to us as something terrible) and for this we give instinctive responses such as blaming others, victimizing ourselves or wanting to be right and we do not each take responsibility for what corresponds to us.

And what should school do?

As teachers, what is clear is that we can no longer teach how we were taught.

The need for Emotional Education

Pay attention to and understand this context to be able to prevent and accompany (emotional scaffolding) so that when the emotional conditions are met, we can teach; It is difficult to teach and learn without being emotionally contained. From the premise that we are emotional beings who reason, it is necessary to give a twist to our school work to put into play what our children and young people really need; not waste a second in taking into account their emotionality as well as those of the teachers; warning what it is that we provoke in the act of teaching. Develop in the child strategic thinking that allows him to find the flavor of knowledge so that learning occurs; explore the world of knowledge and feelings, being attentive to when it is necessary to return to the emotional scaffolding of the teacher, throughout this round trip, assertiveness, empathy, will, tolerance for frustration, autonomy, self-esteem, reasoning, creativity, attentive listening, non-violent communication, love.

The challenge is titanic but it is necessary to face it for the good of children for hopeful social change promoting well-being, the key is in school.

For all the above, the need for emotional education is evident. I celebrate and congratulate the teachers who implement Emotional Education in different parts of the country and Latin America. It is also an important advance that some provincial governments have enacted the Emotional Education law. or implement socio-emotional education, are signs that we are moving towards protecting the emotional health of our childhood.
