This Sunday has concluded a new edition of the absolute Championship of Catalonia with a great competitiveness
The three international athletes with Spain had no problems winning the Catalan title
The facilities of L’Hopsitalet Nord have hosted this weekend the Absolute Championships of Catalonia as the culmination of an intense week that already had another high point last Wednesday with an excellent Meeting of Ciutat de Barcelona in the Joan Serrahima state. By the way, the fact that these are the two best athletic facilities in the Barcelona metropolitan area should make more than one blush.
If on Saturday the big proper names were Bernat Canet and perhaps Xènia Benach, this Sunday they have taken over Esther Guerrero in 1,500 meters, Pol Retamal in the double hectometre and Laura Redondo in hammer throw.
What about Esther Guerrero is another matter. The one from Banyoles had come from doing a sensational 800 in Barcelona with 2:00.35 and has tried to carry her sister Marina to a minimum for the Spanish Championship that has resisted her (she will be in 3,000 meters obstacles, test in the who reigned on Saturday in L’Hospitalet).
Back to a 1,500 in which he will participate in the Spanish Championship and the World Cup in Budapest once his serious injury last year was already forgotten, the New Balance Team athlete he easily prevailed after a sustained change from the penultimate pass through the finish line with 4:21.33followed by Marina Guerrero (4:24.38) and by Laura Domene (4:27.99).
It was as easy or easier the azulgrana Laura Redondo. The Spanish hammer throw record holder with 72 meters ‘dives’ that he achieved last year by beating him for the fourth time began with an exciting 66.87 and did not go beyond that. Perhaps because of the wind she did not feel comfortable and even brushed against the cage several times. She is very close to Budapest, but must be used to the full in the remaining appointments.
For his part, Pol Retamal was much superior in about 200 meters in which he has the second best Spanish mark in history with 20.28 (only after Bruno Hortelano’s 20.04). The blaugrana won with authority in the first semifinal with 21.05 and in the subsequent final with 20.80 (Championship record), followed by Oriol Madí (21.45).
In any case, and although at a much lower level of brands, the great protagonist of Sunday was Aaron Sola with two golds practically followed. The AA Catalunya pitcher took to the court at 6:30 p.m. the week after his 24th birthday to reign in weight with 16.56 followed by the historic Eloi Rovira at 41 (15.88) and at 8:45 p.m. he was forging his discus victory with 52.20.
Another figure on Sunday was the international Raquel González, who won the 5,000-meter walk with a remarkable 21:23.24, just 16 seconds off his best mark. The Catalan is the current 35 km European runner-up and will be in this same test at the Budapest World Cup before giving way to that invention of the mixed relay in a creeping policy of ending the march against which only athletes rebel and an important part of the press.
Also highlight the triumphs of the newly minted Spanish international Laura Bou in her thirties (what a merit she has!) with 43.38, by Geena Stephens in the 400 hurdles close to her personal best with 58.15, by Naiara Estanga in triple with 13.05, by a notable Àlex Salas in the ‘milqui’ (4:01.98) and by David Fradera in the 400 smooth with 46.91. How the wise hands of his coach and former World Cup player Pau Fradera can be seen!
Gold was also won by Andrea Alarcón in discus (50.62), Clara Fernández in pole vault (3.86), Daniel Torrero in height (2.08), Mireia Guarner (16:49.33) and Xavier Badia (14:27.10) in 5,000, a good Adrià Navajón in length (7.40), Joel Martín in 400 hurdles in the absence of Aleix Porras (51.78) and Kevin Cerro (22:11.69). And in the relay Cornellà At. the men’s 4×100 (41.63) and the women’s 4×400 (3:54.22), the AA Catalunya the women’s short (46.60) and Andorra At., the men’s long (3:16.06).
