Retail in Berlin and Brandenburg is growing – gastronomy with losses

Even in the second year of Corona, people in Berlin and Brandenburg spent more money in retail than before the crisis.

The hospitality industry, on the other hand, had to cope with a drop in sales again, as the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office announced on Monday.

Compared to the pre-Corona year 2019, retail sales in Berlin including groceries saw a real increase in sales – i.e. adjusted for inflation – of 6.9 percent. In Brandenburg, the increase was 10.5 percent.

In particular, revenue from online trading grew strongly: According to the statisticians, there was an increase of 40.9 percent in retail outside of sales rooms in Berlin and 47 percent in Brandenburg. Shops without groceries, on the other hand, lost.

The year was significantly worse for hotels, pubs and restaurants in both federal states. In Berlin, turnover in the hospitality industry fell by almost 49 percent compared to 2019. The losses in Brandenburg amounted to more than 31 percent.
