Private Sector Development

Private sector development focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in low- and middle-income countries. Partly thanks to Dutch development programmes, efforts were made last year to stimulate direct jobs and support business plans in the private sector.

Security and Rule of Law

This theme focuses on improving security and the rule of law in the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes region, North Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan. For example, demining activities in some of those countries resulted in the release of more than 14 million square meters of land. Furthermore, 729,000 people gained access to justice.

climate

Like other rich countries, when signing the Paris Climate Agreement, the Netherlands promised to support developing countries in combating climate change. All kinds of activities were also developed in this area in 2022. For example, 3.4 million people gained access to renewable energy, 4.3 million hectares of sustainable forest were planted and more than 10 million farmers received support to make their activities more resistant to climate change.

Food security

The Netherlands invests in better nutrition, agricultural development and sustainable land use. Food security is an important spearhead within Dutch development cooperation, also with a view to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. In 2022, more than 23 million people will be reached with activities aimed at better food, small-scale food producers will be helped to increase their productivity and substantial investments will be made in sustainable land use.

Water

Water management is a global spearhead, as was recently shown during the UN Water Conference. Last year, Dutch development money was invested in, among other things, providing access to improved water sources and sanitation for millions of people.
