Resignation? Comeback? Angelique Kerber talks about future plans

Germany’s tennis star Angelique Kerber has not yet given up the dream of big titles. As soon as she comes out of her baby break, the woman from Kiel wants to attack again. Resigning is not an issue for them.

She does not yet know when she will return to the tennis court, said Angelique Kerber, who is expecting her first child in spring 2023, in an interview with “wtatennis.com“. The only question is when and not whether she will continue her career.

“I don’t know when or at which tournament because I really want to take my time. And when I come back, I want to come back 100 percent, be fit again and feel good. That’s the plan,” she said 34 year old.

In recent years, Kerber has been able to observe at close range that it is possible to be successful on the tour as a mother. It was, among others, Serena Williams, Viktoria Azarenka and Kim Clijsters who continued their careers after birth.

“We saw mothers coming back and also winning big titles. I hope to be one of them soon,” said Kerber, who hopes to be an “inspiration” for new mothers.

The best advice she has received from her companions so far? “Take your time, enjoy the moment. They said I’ll feel when it’s time to come back. Better a month later than a month sooner.”

Kerber continues to be active on the tennis court

Despite the baby break, the German has by no means left her tennis racket in the corner in recent weeks. In addition to a reduced fitness program, she also regularly played a few balls in her own tennis academy.

“I play with the young kids. It’s not that intense, but I’m there. And that also makes me happy because I miss tennis life. At the same time, I’m looking forward to my new life and what’s next year will bring for me,” said Kerber.
