The municipality of Westerveld and the Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board (WDOD) are going to collect old pesticides from residents of Westerveld. People who hand in chemical pesticides receive a voucher that can be spent at local entrepreneurs.
“We see that people often have leftovers of old pesticides in the shed that are not used,” says Berry Bergman of WDOD. “Then it is important to dispose of these agents in the correct way. These agents are very harmful to aquatic life and must absolutely not end up in the sewer. That is why it is important to destroy pesticides in the right way, via the appropriate means. special collection points at the municipalities.”
On Friday 13 May, residents can dispose of the pesticides at the waste transfer station in Havelte for the voucher. This concerns, for example, means for removing weeds on tiles or vermin in the vegetable garden.
“With the use of chemical pesticides in the garden or around the house, there is a chance that these harmful substances will end up in our ditches, canals and rivers,” continues Bergman. “This has major consequences for animals, plants and groundwater. Sufficient alternative resources are now available that cause less damage to our water and the soil.”
“A nice side effect of this action is that, in addition to the environment, we also support local entrepreneurs,” says Alderman Henk Doeven. “A win-win situation and enough reason to check whether there are still remnants of old protective equipment in the shed or cupboard.”
