The National Coordinator Groningen (NCG) and the municipality of Groningen have put an end to the arbitrariness of the demolition and new construction scheme in Ten Boer. All residents of the Ommelanderstraat will get a new home.
It concerns sixteen homes on the Ommelanderstraat and four on the Blinkerdlaan that threatened to fall by the wayside. After a second group was recently added to the scheme, the people of these five residential blocks also sounded the alarm. They asked the NCG and the municipality to take another good look at their houses.
The fact that they are still eligible for demolition and new construction has to do with new calculations. Initially, the houses of five residential blocks were only eligible for reinforcement. On closer inspection, it turned out that the reinforcement is larger than expected. This would also increase the costs to such an extent that new construction would be more obvious.
Big cheers
“We are very relieved,” says resident Arnold Leijendekker. “This is great news. This is what we had hoped for. Of course you are insecure in such a situation. It remains to be seen whether the NCG and the municipality come to the same conclusion.”
The residents were told the news on Thursday evening during an inserted meeting in the Buurhoes. “There was a big cheer. Then we went home.”
Leijendekker believes that appropriate joy is in order. “That’s it, because we realize very well that there are many people in the quake area who, like us, have to fight for reinforcement or demolition and new construction. They deserve our support. I have decided that in my free time I will help other people to get what they are entitled to.”
Eliminate inequality in stages
According to the NCG and the municipality, it is nice that the residents now have clarity about what will happen to their home. On closer inspection, they find it inexplicable that owners of the same type of housing were at risk of being treated differently. Recently, this unequal treatment has been lifted in several stages.
