Residents of emergency shelter Haarlem move after salmonella outbreak

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has decided to:
residents of the two emergency shelter boats in Haarlem. Yesterday, the organization announced that nearly fifty asylum seekers were infected with the salmonella bacteria on one of the two boats.

The decision to move residents to another place is, among other things, on the advice of the
GGD Kennemerland. “We were prepared for this from the COA and the advice from the GGD is also clear.
Laag Zuthem,” explains COA spokesperson Alet Bouwmeester.

They are accommodated there separately. People who may or may be infected with corona are temporarily staying at this location at Alerdinck park, but this is not being used at the moment. “The municipality of Raalte has accepted COA’s request. We are very happy with that,” says Bouwmeester.

Not via drinking water

The infections surfaced on the rescue boat Liberty Ann. Eight residents have been hospitalized. The infected people suffer from diarrhea and fever, among other things. The bacteria is also present on the other boat, the Virginia.

The first results of the investigations by the GGD show that there has been no contamination via drinking water, but in order to be able to rule this out definitively, the samples remain
grow. “As long as the source is not yet in the picture, we will do everything we can to further
prevent spread. That is why the decision has been taken to house people elsewhere.”
