Residents at Van Echtenstraat in Hoogeveen ravaged by rat plague

The use of a rat catcher or poison does not seem to be successful in combating the pests in the house on the Van Echtenstraat in Hoogeveen. The Hoogeveense street has been infested by rats for over a year and a half. One of the residents even captured the rodents in the crawl spaces on video. According to the CDA, action must be taken to improve the situation in the street. To this end, they submitted questions to the college.

Danielle van Zwol is one of the residents who hears the rats walking around in the crawl spaces of her home and she also registers that on the screen. “It’s easy to see from the couch whether you’ve caught a rat. Then you don’t have to open the hatch every time,” says Van Zwol.

According to the resident, the sewage system in the street needs to be replaced, which she believes is the cause of the rat plague. A subsidence in the street and in her alley also contributed to the arrival of the rodents.

Jeannette van Slochteren is also a resident of Van Echtenstraat. Although she does not have the rats in her home, she is aware that the neighbor across the street is experiencing a lot of trouble from the rodents. “There is a hole here at the drainpipe and if you remove the tile from under it, you will see the corridors,” concludes Van Slochteren. “The rats can get to the houses through these corridors.”

The CDA’s ‘from council to street’ campaign has made it clear that residents have been dealing with this problem for some time. The party would therefore like to do something about the current situation, in collaboration with the residents. “The municipality has a duty to combat pests and that goes through the Area waste company, but we as CDA want the municipality to make a plan together with residents to see what the cause is and where the solution lies,” says party councilor Bert Otten. .
