Residents are looking forward to new Zaanbrug: “Temporary bridge has been open for far too long”

The end of the work at the Zaanbrug is slowly coming into view. The new bridge between Wormerveer and Wormer should open in six months. At the Open Day of the Construction, residents were able to view the work today. “I will be glad when the new bridge is there,” says one of them. “If the temporary bridge opens, it will take much too long before it is closed again.”

In the radiant sun, various employees of the province and the contractor show the progress to the residents. The ‘cellar’ is clearly visible: under water level, hard work is being done on the foundations of the bridge.

Project manager Gerrit Jansen about the activities around the Zaanbrug – NH News

In general, the project is going well, but: “After we put the contract out to tender and the contractor started, there were huge price increases in building materials,” says project manager Gerrit Jansen. “The prices of steel and wood have shot up and wages have also risen. We couldn’t do much about that – everyone has to deal with it – but it was a big setback for us.”

He shows what still needs to be done on the new bridge. “We are working on the pillars of the bridge that will come out of the water. Then the girders are laid and the shape of the bridge becomes visible. Then the steel superstructure is placed and in November the fall (bridge deck, ed.) If we really get into winter weather it might be early 2024, but now the delivery schedule is at the end of this year.”

The temporary bridge still has to be removed at the beginning of the new year, but Jansen does not expect this to cause much inconvenience. Grinning: “Building a bridge like that takes a lot more time than removing it.”
