Reserve goalkeeper Barry Lauwers extends expiring contract with FC Volendam

Barry Lauwers has signed a new contract with FC Volendam. The 23-year-old closing post will remain connected to the premier divisionist for the next two years. After the departure of loanee Filip Stankovic, Lauwers will compete to become the first goalkeeper at FC Volendam.

“I’m not done with Volendam yet,” says Lauwers on the FC Volendam website. “After interest from a number of clubs, I have chosen to compete. I hope I can show the club and the loyal supporters I’m the right man in the right place.”

Technical director Jasper van Leeuwen indicates that it was a difficult choice for both parties. “Of course he was faced with a difficult choice: to try his luck at Volendam or elsewhere. Barry knew what we wanted and we are happy that he chose to stay with Volendam and fight for his place under the crossbar. Even though he has only been able to start once in the first team this season, he did well and radiated a lot of calm. Barry continues to develop into an increasingly better keeper and we are curious to see where his ceiling lies.”

Lauwers has been through the youth academy of FC Volendam since 2011 and made his debut in the first division against Jong AZ in 2021. In the pecking order, he had to take place in the past two seasons behind Filip Stankovic, who was hired from Internazionale. In recent seasons he has always been the first goalkeeper at Jong FC Volendam in the second division.
