31 percent of workers have experienced belittling or humiliating behavior from their manager. This equates to nearly three million workers. 22 percent have had to deal with inappropriate behaviour, 40 percent with verbal aggression at work.
This has emerged from research among a representative group of 2400 workers, carried out by researcher Maurice de Hond at the request of the CNV trade union.
“These are shocking figures,” said Piet Fortuin, CNV chairman. “A shockingly high number of workers are intimidated or humiliated. This is therefore not limited to TV programs but happens in many workplaces. Completely unacceptable, of course. The workplace must be safe.”
The world goes on
Last week, de Volkskrant published an article in which former employees of the TV program De Wereld Draait Door say they have been victims of “extreme outbursts of anger and public humiliation” by presenter Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and editors-in-chief.
The CNV study also shows that one in six respondents goes to work with a stomach ache. The same percentage states that the atmosphere on the work floor causes them stress. 11 percent have a culture of fear and 15 percent find their manager unpredictable and unpredictable.
Women are more often confronted with transgressive behavior and intimidation than men. 26 percent of men have to deal with it, compared to 37 percent of women. More than half of the respondents say that the employer takes action against inappropriate behaviour. Not at 16 percent and 33 percent don’t know. “That indicates that almost half has not been arranged,” says Fortuin, who calls on employers to get started with this theme.
