Rescue brigade warns of cold bathing water

Please note if you want to swim outside on these sunny days. The water is still treacherously cold in some places and that can be dangerous.

“You cramp up, your breathing quickens and you stiffen. Swimming is made impossible in this way,” says Albert Wink of the rescue brigade. The temperature can vary greatly per location.

Recreational lake Nijstad near Hoogeveen is a good example of this. The average temperature of the water there this weekend is around sixteen degrees. That while according to Wink it can be different in a good spring that the water is already around twenty degrees at this time of the year.

The two friends Dex (9) and Morris (10) take a chance anyway. Their boat has blown up and the wind has died down a bit. But nice in the water is different. The boat is leaking and both have to go back to shore via the water. Still, it doesn’t stop them from going into the water when the boat is inflated again.

The cold water has not caused any problems in Drenthe so far. “But incidents have already happened in the country,” says Wink. “Unfortunately also with a bad outcome.”
