Rescue brigade must continue after drowning: “Talking, talking, talking”

A beautiful beach day ended with a drama on Sunday. A 22-year-old man drowned near the Noordpier in Velsen-Noord, probably as a result of a strong current. A day later, the volunteers of the IJmuider Rescue Brigade are back at their posts. They are at the start of two sweltering and therefore probably busy beach days.

“Talks were already held with the people who were involved in the rescue operation last night and there was also talk this morning. Because yes, they have to get it out,” says Fred Dictus of the IJmuider Rescue Brigade. He goes as good and as bad as it goes back to the order of the day.

It is useless to linger in grief, Rico Schipper, who was involved in the rescue, also knows. “It is terrible for the relatives. I have been able to give it a place myself. I have learned to deal with it, we have been trained for it. So it will be okay.”

Upcoming crowds

His presence is desperately needed with the crowds to come. This morning it’s still going, but by noon the beach is filling up. Tomorrow will probably be even busier. To prevent more accidents, Fred Dictus asks people to pay close attention when they go into the sea. “It can be very treacherous, so be careful. And let parents keep an eye on their children. That can make a difference.”
