OL wants to ‘move on with Jason’
Jason Denayer (26) plays in defense of Olympique Lyon alongside Jérôme Boateng (33) and, with a market value of 20 million euros, is one of the most valuable central defenders with a contract that ends in 2022. Since the turn of the year, the Belgian international has been allowed to negotiate with interested parties to whom it is loud “Het NieuwsbladThere are numerous: FC Barcelona, Newcastle United, Juventus and SSC Napoli.
Denayer has been with the Gones since 2018, for whom he made 136 appearances (eight goals/two assists) – more than for any other club. He was one of the regulars this season before injuring his ankle in December and has been out ever since. As OL President Jean-Michel Aulas recently confirmed at a press conference, the forced break is also a reason for the negotiations to stall: “He doesn’t say no, he doesn’t say yes immediately, he wants to end his rehab. We still have chances to extend him.” The club would “like to continue with Jason” and have also made an offer that the ball is now in Denayer’s hands.
Strong to Rüdiger: Most valuable central defenders with contract expiring in 2022
The defensive all-rounder hinted in November that he wants to stay at the club if an agreement is reached. According to Aulas, the club is now also looking at “other leads” so as not to be left empty-handed if negotiations with Denayer should fail. In that case, the right-footed player could add the sixth club to his résumé (see transfer history).
Report: Lyon coach Bosz removes Boateng from the squad
While the question of Denayer’s sporting future is still unclear, he made his comeback in team training. However, a game against OGC Nice on Saturday (21:00 CEST) comes too soon – the Belgian should be available again in the next game at RC Lens.
According to L’Équipe, Boateng will also be missing against Nice. Accordingly, coach Peter Bosz did not take him into account, and the Dutchman is said to have informed him of his decision on Friday after training.
With Messi & Boateng: Biggest market value losers in Ligue 1 (Winter 2021)
So far, the long-time Bayern professional has made 17 league appearances and was mostly in the starting XI, but recently showed a poor performance in the 0-2 draw against AS Monaco. In addition, Boateng is said to have clashed with fellow players several times in the past few weeks. Lyon are having another rather disappointing season with the third most valuable squad in France and are ranked 8th in the Ligue 1 table.
