Report: Wolverhampton Wanderers to ex-coach Nuno Espírito Santo

Currently based in Saudi Arabia

Wolverhampton Wanderers have apparently stumbled upon an old friend in their search for a new manager: Nuno Espírito Santo. “The Athleticreports that Wolves have held talks with the 48-year-old, who currently works at Al-Ittihad Club in Saudi Arabia. There is also an exchange with his agents. Espírito Santo coached the Englishman in 198 games between 2017 and 2021, in which he provided the best point average of this century with 1.69 points per game. In recent club history, only Mick McCarthy has played 269 games more often on the touchline.

There is talk that Espírito Santo could imagine a return to the “Wolves”. He celebrated promotion to the Premier League with the club in 2018, before two seventh places followed and participation in the Europa League was celebrated in the 2019/20 season. After 13th place in the 2020/21 season, the cooperation was ended “by mutual agreement”, as it was said, before the actual end of the contract in 2023. Espírito Santo then went to Tottenham Hotspur, where the chapter came to an early end after just four months and 17 games. “I know how much Nuno and his team wanted to be successful and I regret that I had to make this decision,” commented sports director Fabio Paratici on the separation in November last year. For the new season, Espírito Santo signed on with the Al-Ittihad Club in Saudi Arabia, where his contract is valid until 2024. The record from eight games to date is four wins, three draws and one defeat.

At the Wolves, Espírito Santo would inherit his compatriot Bruno Lage, who was over after a little over a year in office. The English are currently ranked 18th in the relegation zone after nine games. Until recently, the Spaniard Julen Lopetegui was considered a promising candidate, but he had reportedly rejected an engagement for family reasons. As long as no new coach has been found, Steve Davis will look after the team on an interim basis.
