Coach still undecided
After a “Bild” report and a subsequent denial from Greuther Fürth, at least one thing is certain: the farewell to “Kleeblatt” coach Stefan Leitl after the season is by no means a done deal. Remaining with the probable Bundesliga relegated does not seem to be out of the question yet, although the “kicker” with Schalke 04 is focusing on a prominent, presumed interested party.
According to the magazine, there is loose contact between the Royal Blues and Leitl, who took over the Fürth team in 2019 and surprisingly made it to the top flight. At S04, the former Schalke professional and former Fürth coach Mike Büskens recently took over the team on an interim basis, expressly only until the end of the season. “There is nothing to announce, it is open in all directions,” said Leitl himself about his near future. The “WAZ” recently added that the 44-year-old is not yet considered a serious candidate.

From a historical point of view, Leitl is not Thorsten Lieberknecht or Frank Schmidt, about whom one can still say that they have been clubs for many years.
As a further option, the report assumes a longer engagement with the Middle Franconia and quotes the coach: “I know what I have in Fürth.” A one-year break is also conceivable – it is unclear whether after the end of the contract in 2023 or after a miss of relegation. With a move to a bigger club like Schalke, it seems certain that there will soon be a decision about leaving, as there is an exit clause until the end of April. Of course, Leitl could also do this preventively without even knowing his next club.
