REPORT. In the hell of Bachmoet, Flemish emergency doctors Maïté and Simon are standing by: “People are severely hypothermic, malnourished and traumatized” | Abroad

“I’m going to be honest: I didn’t immediately say yes to the proposal to come to Ukraine.” A few kilometers from the battlefield of Bachmoet, our journalist Arnaud De Decker meets emergency doctors Simon Lagrange and Maïté Vanneste, two Flemings who have already seen a lot of suffering with Doctors Without Borders. But the merciless war in Ukraine leaves an unparalleled impression on them. “We get people here without limbs, others have to be amputated. These are situations that we are not used to in Belgium.”
