Report: FC Bayern discusses the return of Tottenham’s Höjbjerg

Tottenham contract until 2025

Except for the signing of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer, which has been bagged for months, FC Bayern is still relatively quiet with regard to newcomers for 2023/24. Rumors about Declan Rice (before the Arsenal transfer), Min-jae Kim, Moisés Caicedo & Co. have not (so far) become concrete – but now another, this time well-known name is added to the list of possible squad reinforcements. According to that “Bild” Podcast “Bayern Insider” Munich deal with a return campaign by Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg.

Accordingly, the name of the midfielder from Tottenham Hotspur was discussed on Tuesday in the seven-member “Sports Committee” around the supervisory board members Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. After the separation of the board members Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic, the transfer planning will be pushed ahead in this round. And Höjbjerg, who was under contract with Bayern between 2012 and 2016, is obviously a mind game because he has the qualities required by coach Thomas Tuchel for the “six” position.

Update 12:09 p.m.: Loud sky there is apparently nothing to the rumors about Höjbjerg.

The FCB bosses would have to negotiate with the consultant heavyweight Pini Zahavi, who they know. The Israeli is offering Höjbjerg, who has a contract in London until 2025, on the market, it is said. The Dane, who will be 28 on August 5, switched to Southampton in the Premier League for 15 million euros in 2016 – after a total of 25 appearances for the Munich professionals. In 2020 he moved on to Tottenham for 16.6 million euros. At Spurs, the right-footed player scored ten goals and 16 assists in 145 games across all competitions. He increased his market value there to his career high of 45 million euros.

According to reports, those responsible at FC Bayern would make cutbacks when it came to the position profile they were looking for. Should Höjbjerg move to Säbener Strasse, he would add to the club’s returnee stats, which include the likes of Sandro Wagner, Mats Hummels and Stefan Effenberg. Commenting on the rumour, TM user Bayernfan40 said: “I like Höjbjerg and would love to see him back with us, but Höjbjerg is not a six and bringing him as such will lead to many disappointed faces. Höjbjerg would be someone to play alongside Kimmich in a double six. But not behind (and that seems to be what we’re looking for).”

User “pstizzo” was much more skeptical: “He’s not exactly the defensive six that we need, but rather plays a little forward. So keep him in the maximum unsuitable position. It seems we’re just working our shadow list from top to bottom right now. Starting with Rice, moving on to Caicedo, now Hojbjerg, who’s next? (…) We should intensify our efforts outside the Premier League. Transferring players from the Premier League is almost impossible, not only because of the transfer fees called for, when it comes to players who are not currently on the hit list.
