The Fauna Protection in the Netherlands is reporting against the mayor of the municipality of Westerveld and against the hobby farmer who was attacked by a wolf on Sunday morning, who was eventually shot. The organization reports this today in a press release. “This crime should not go unpunished,” he said.
The wolf in question bit a sheep farmer in Wapse (Esdorp in the municipality of Westerveld in the Dutch province of Drenthe) yesterday morning around 7 a.m. when the man wanted to chase the animal away. The farmer did this because his sheep were attacked.
As far as is known, it is the first time that a wolf has attacked a human since the animal has returned to the Netherlands. The farmer tried to drive the wolf away with a pitchfork and a shovel, but was bitten on the arm.

“Farmer was in violation”
Nature organization Fauna Protection says it is doing everything it can to ensure that there is prosecution for “attacking, disturbing and killing the strictly protected wolf”. According to the organization, the facts now known show “that there was no attack by a wolf on a human, but by a human on a wolf”. “Anyone who is unwise enough to attack a predator with a pitchfork and a shovel can expect the animal to feel threatened and to defend itself. The hobby farmer was clearly in violation.”
Police
The Fauna Protection states that the fence of the farmer’s property was also not in order, because the wolf could first crawl under it and then jump over it. The injuries of the farmer would also be less than expected, the organization argues. “Every day, dogs abuse people much worse without such rigorous consequences as in this case.”
The mayor is blamed for the fact that the wolf was shot a little later without any immediate danger.
“The wolf turned out to be lying under solar panels on a meadow two hours later. And was shot dead by the police by order of the mayor. The protocol for judging whether a wolf has attacked humans and then needs to be killed has not been followed at all. The mayor had no right to order anyone to shoot the wolf. And the police should have known and verified that before firing.”
“Attacked repeatedly”
Mayor Rikus Jager told the ‘AD’ yesterday that several witnesses had seen how the wolf attacked repeatedly, and that there was indeed a danger from the animal, even two hours after the farmer’s first report. He was taken to hospital after the confrontation with damaged tendons, but did not require surgery.
