Everyone aged 12 and older is expected to have the opportunity to get a repeat shot against corona from the second half of September. First the people with a higher medical risk and healthcare personnel with patient contact are invited, then everyone else aged 12 years and older. This repeat jab can be obtained from three months after the last corona jab or a previous infection. This is what Minister Kuipers of Health, Welfare and Sport writes to the House of Representatives in response to the advice of the OMT Vaccinations (OMT-V). The repeat vaccination against corona is necessary to maintain protection against serious illness and death.

The peak of the corona crisis seems to be behind us and vaccination has made an important contribution to this. Nevertheless, the cabinet is taking into account a possible new corona wave in the autumn. The OMT-V recommends starting a new round of vaccinations in order to maintain protection against serious illness and death, to make care accessible and to prevent social burden due to, for example, the loss of personnel.

Start vaccination round

From the second half of September, RIVM will invite people with an increased risk of serious illness and death to get a repeat vaccination against corona from the GGD. This is the group that was invited for a repeat shot earlier this year, expanded to include people younger than 60 who are annually invited for the flu shot. People who get the flu shot every year and who are younger than 60 are invited by their GP to get their shot at the GGD. Healthcare workers with patient contact are simultaneously invited for a repeat injection to protect the high-risk groups.

Updated vaccines are used if they offer better protection than the current vaccines. These vaccines must first be registered by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

People aged 60 and over living at home who are unable to go to a GGD vaccination location themselves can be registered with the GGD by their GPs and will then be vaccinated at home. For residents of care institutions, the vaccination is offered in the institution itself, they can also have themselves taken at a GGD vaccination location if they wish.

After that, everyone, from 12 years old, who wants to get a repeat shot against corona. Even people who have not yet received a vaccination (basic series) against corona can still make an appointment with the GGD.
