Repeal of abortion | 59 years of setback for women in the US, by Ana Bernal Triviño

It was warned and, although it was foreseeable, it continues to be scandalous and serious the repeal of abortion in the United States. From now on it will be each State that will have to regulate or prohibit it. A matter of luck. They have just destroyed the legal umbrella that protected women in the country.

Trump and the ultra groups that supported him will be applauding because they got their plan. We are back in 1973 all of a sudden. Almost 50 years of setback for the North Americans, who have already seen how in recent months they were persecuted and attacked in some states for having an abortion or for defending it.

This immediately opens three reflections. A, increasing inequality among women. Between those who have money to travel to other states and those who cannot, especially teenagers. Those who cannot will opt desperately for unsafe abortions, risking even his death.

Two, the symbolic. What this represents in a country that is considered a benchmark for democracy. No abortion, but they do allow forced marriage even with minors in some states. The liberal judges who have voted against the repeal warn of the danger it poses to the essence of the rule of law. If American women have to start from scratch to recover this loss, what support do those with worse political or social contexts have? Because this affects, consequently, everyone. Right now there is a woman in Malta about to die because she is not allowed to have an abortion. And cases like her, hundreds around the world.

And three. The macho reaction is in the United States, in Spain and countless other countries. Our freedoms are not guaranteed. That abortion is still prevented demonstrates the rootedness of macho thinking and the effect of the ‘lobbies’ that have reached the institutions. As democratic societies we will also have to answer why we let them advance. They are no joke. They really limit our freedom. Perhaps it is not trivial that it is now the US, which is considered the pinnacle of democracy in the world, with a powerful loudspeaker. And from there, they send us a clear message to the rest of the world: We are here and we are coming for you.
