Despite the sale of thousands of apartments in connection with the takeover by the Bochum-based housing group Vonovia, rental income at the real estate company Deutsche Wohnen increased last year.
The contract rents in 2021 amounted to around 843.6 million euros, as the group announced on Friday. That was around six million euros more than in the previous year.
At that time, the Berlin rent cap had caused rents to drop significantly. The Senate wanted to use this instrument to get the rising rents in the capital under control, but ultimately failed before the Federal Constitutional Court. Deutsche Wohnen was also able to increase its operating profit by 2.4 percent to EUR 553.6 million.
Last year, the company was taken over by competitor Vonovia. The Bochum-based company now holds around 87 percent of Deutsche Wohnen. The deal was particularly controversial in Berlin, where Deutsche Wohnen still owns around 100,000 apartments.
In order to appease critics, Vonovia boss Rolf Buch had announced, among other things, that regular rent increases in Berlin would be limited until 2026.
