Renewed regional exhibition in Ypres emphasizes inspiration

The visitor center for Ypres and the Westhoek in the west wing of the Lakenhallen was opened in March 2012. The regional exhibition in the visitor center needed a thorough upgrade. The museum was given a video wall that plays films about the tourist offer of Ypres and the Westhoek.

Visitors can also see the various hiking networks and places of interest in the region on the basis of two large maps. Also further in the exhibition, visitors receive information about all kinds of activities and places of interest in Ypres and De Westhoek. There is also a new application with “tips from locals”, films in which Ypres residents give tips on various tourist topics.

“In the original design of the regional exhibition in 2012, the emphasis was on providing the visitor with maximum information. Today, most people have a smartphone and can look up a lot themselves. It is therefore no longer necessary to process all the information in a regional exhibition Hence the choice to put inspiring the visitor first,” says the alderman of Culture Diego Desmadryl (Open Ypres).

The total investment for the renewal is approximately 100,000 euros. Of this, 29,000 euros is contributed by the province of West Flanders.
