Renewed Poelberg site in Tielt: ‘ideal break for walkers, cyclists and families with children’

It is a real calf biter, the 45 meter high Poelberg. The altimeters are therefore attractive for cyclists and walkers. But the Poelberg also has other assets. Like enjoying with the family, relaxing, having a drink…

Children priority

Now that the site has been completely renovated, the Poelberg must become the tourist attraction of the region. The brasserie has been given a fresh look, there are new cycling and walking routes and there is also a lot of attention for the little ones.

“The children get priority here. We have a very nice picnic area and a play area at the back,” says alderman of Tourism Hedwig Verdoodt.

Monastery

Until 1985, a monastery and girls’ school stood on top of the summit. Even now, some of it can still be found.

“At the back of the building there is a very nice picture of how it used to be. The girls in rows in the courtyard, listening very strictly to the strict nuns who were here.”

Subsidy

The province also invested in the renovated Poelberg site, which fits in perfectly with the plan to create more rest areas for cyclists and walkers.

Deputy Sabien Lahaye-Battheu: “By the end of next year we want to realize at least one nice picnic zone in every West Flemish municipality. The counter today stands at 35.” Or, about half.
